PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Salary to be commensurate with experience.
The hiring range for this position is: $21.51 - $26.89 Hourly

Sign On Bonus: New employees are eligible for a $2,500 bonus; with $500 paid on the first payroll, and $1000 paid upon successful completion of the 6 month introductory period and $1,000.

The City of Aurora Water Utility Worker performs manual labor duties and will assist with routine maintenance and repair functions for one of the multiple divisions within the Aurora Water Department. Employees in this position will demonstrate their work by modeling the Core 4 Values of: Customer Service, Professionalism, Integrity, and Respect.

PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Aurora Water Operations and Maintenance section is currently accepting applications for the following divisions:

Wastewater
The Wastewater Section performs preventive and emergency maintenance of wastewater mainlines. These tasks are performed daily using Vac-Con combination sewer cleaners and Closed Circuit Television equipment as well as other various support trucks and equipment. The vast majority of work is performed above ground so that entry into manholes is infrequent. The nature of our work is preventative, so we seldom have after hour's emergencies that require employees to respond to work at odd hours. All Wastewater employees participate in the standby program that requires being "on-call" 24-7, two to three weeks per year. Average overtime worked in this section is 30 hours per year.


Construction & Repair (C&R)
This section of Water T & D is responsible for the repair and maintenance of over 1500 miles of pipeline. Core functions include emergency water and service line repairs, fire hydrant, valve and vault rehabilitation or replacement. Sewer repairs for gravity, force mains and reuse piping including manhole maintenance within the right of way are a duty as well. Water main replacement throughout the summer months and snow removal in the winter months. Overtime is a requirement of the job so the ability to work call back duty must be a high priority and is a condition of this area. Average overtime worked in this section is 250 hours per year.

Stormwater
The Stormwater Section within Aurora Water's Operations & Maintenance Division is responsible for a variety of tasks. Work assignments or activities can change daily depending on weather, workloads, and projects. Work activities may include the following: tree removal, mowing, trimming, chemical applications to control weeds, stormwater infrastructure inspections, maintenance and repair of stormwater pipes and culverts, concrete repairs, work in high traffic areas, and work in off-road areas along creeks or channels. Snow removal by hand and with plow trucks is another function performed by the Stormwater Section. Typically, this position does not require a lot of overtime, but maintenance workers are required to work overtime when performing streets snow removal and when essential staff is required to respond to emergencies that occur within the Aurora Water Department or the city of Aurora. Average overtime worked in this section is 30 hours per year.

In addition, all divisions will perform the following primary duties and responsibilities:
  • Loads and unloads tools
  • Average overtime worked in this section is 35 hours per year
  • Repair and replacement activities
  • Perform routine equipment maintenance
  • Assist work crews in the installation, repair, testing and maintenance of water lines, sewer lines, stormwater lines, channels and structures, large water meters, valves, fire hydrants, and other equipment
  • Perform tasks using tools such as hand tools, shovel, jackhammer, and power tools
  • May assist with on-call shifts as needed assist Public Works department with snow removal activities
  • Servicing, repairing, adjusting, and testing machines, devices, moving parts, and equipment that operate primarily based on mechanical principles.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS & WORKING CONDITIONS

Minimum Qualifications & Working Conditions

Education:
  • High School Diploma or GED required
Experience:
  • 1-year work experience related to manual labor preferred
Abilities:
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time
  • Ability to understand oral and written instructions
  • Ability to operate or receive training on various types of maintenance and construction equipment
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds repetitively
  • Ability to work overtime, call back duty, and standby with forty five-minute response times
  • Ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong
Skills:
  • Skill in the use of ground maintenance equipment and the use of hand tools preferred
  • This job requires attention to detail and being thorough in completing work tasks
Licenses and/or Certificates:
  • State Issued Driver's license with a good driving history required
  • Current Commercial Driver's License or ability to obtain a Colorado Commercial Driver's License within 6 months of hire date.
Physical Demands:
  • Heavy physical work
  • Requires the ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds, with or without assistance
  • Requires frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing over 100 pounds, with assistance
  • Considerable walking and standing
  • Frequently performs activities requiring a full range of body movement including bending, stooping, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and climbing
  • Hand/eye and hand/foot coordination for operation of equipment and vehicles
  • Vision for reading gauges and written instruction
  • Hearing/listening for instructions and warning signals
Work Environment:
  • Works primarily outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to noise, dust, odors, and fumes
  • Some work may be performed in trenches, confined spaces, and in high traffic areas.
Equipment Used:
  • Operates equipment and vehicles common to utilities maintenance functions.
  • This position may require the incumbent to occasionally use personal equipment (e.g. vehicle, cell phone, tools, etc.) in the course of their employment.
Essential Personnel:
  • When a local announcement of emergency or disaster is declared by the City, all City of Aurora employees may be required to work as essential personnel.
