During a 6-8 week Expedition, interns will gain hands on experience as a working crew member onboard Sailing Yacht Whatever it Takes, a 100' school ship.
Each intern will work under the direction of a Supervisor and have focused training in one of the following departments:
Bridge - Responsible for overall management of the vessel and personnel, passage planning, navigation, and safety.
Engineer - Responsible for all ship systems, including propulsion engine, generators, water makers, chillers, pumps, etc. Performs onboard repairs and daily and annual maintenance.
Galley - Responsible for all culinary operations, including provisioning, food management, galley cleanliness, and preparing 3 meals a day for 18 crew.
Interior - Responsible for interior cleanliness and organization, including bathrooms, cabins, galley, and common spaces. Manages onboard laundry service for all crew.
Deck - Responsible for all above deck cleanliness and organization, including wash downs, rigging maintenance, tender maintenance, and safety equipment checks. Performs all above deck operations including sail maneuvers, launching and recovering rigid inflatable boats, and ensuring running rigging is properly coiled at all times.
Each week interns will be responsible for meeting Weekly Training Objectives outlined in weekly training plans.
Interns will review these plans at the beginning of the week and at the end of the week.
In addition to weekly training objectives, interns will also have specific responsibilities outlined in daily, pre-departure, and arrival checklists.
All interns will also have general crew responsibilities, including an assigned dish day, watch keeping while on passage, and general cleanliness of individual and shared spaces.
At the end of an Expedition, the intern should be capable of performing all basic boat operations that would be expected of a working deckhand in the professional sailing or yachting industry.
