This job delivers medications to designated areas under close supervision and according to detailed instructions, policies and procedures. This job refills and maintains automated dispensing machines; prices manual medication orders, inventories and reorders stock in the pharmacy; enters data into a computer system and prints labels as necessary; reviews physician’s orders and enters patient medication orders into the pharmacy order entry system; identifies problems with orders and notifies pharmacist or nursing when orders need clarification or to request patient information (i.e. allergies, height, weight) when needed; accurately compounds IV Admixtures and other assigned preparations utilizing aseptic technique and proper pharmaceutical procedures; maintains stock in all assigned areas including the IV room and other pharmacy areas; performs related clerical duties including typing, answering phone, filing and greeting nurses and physicians at the Pharmacy window.

Education

Required – High School diploma or equivalent

Work Experience

Preferred – 1 year Hospital experience

Certifications

Required – Current Pharmacy Technician Certification issued by the Board of Pharmacy in the state of practice

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Must have computer skills and dexterity required for data entry and retrieval of patient information.

  • Must be proficient with Windows-style applications and keyboard.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and the ability to present information clearly and professionally to varying levels of individuals throughout the patient care process.

  • Skills to operate standard pharmacy and office equipment

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Must be able to travel throughout and between facilities.

  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule (e.g. 24/7, weekend, holiday, on call availability).

Job Duties

  • Ensures customer service and teamwork while conducting responsibilities

  • Fills medication orders, charges/credits all medication, stocks, delivers, and inspects assigned areas.

  • Prepares IV admixtures and other extemporaneous compounds and enters TPN orders into the computer system.

  • Maintains competency in professional growth and responsibilities

  • Adapts behavior to the specific patient population, including but not limited to: respect for privacy, method of introduction to the patient, adapting explanation of services or procedures to be performed, requesting permissions and communication style.

  • Other related duties as required.
