The French American School of New York (FASNY) is an international, independent, coeducational day school providing a global education to approximately 750 students in nursery through grade 12.
Founded in 1980 as a 17-student preschool, FASNY has evolved to become a premier bilingual and international N-12 day school with global reach.
FASNY is looking to hire an experienced Human Resources leader to spearhead our people related initiatives. The ideal candidate will bring organizational transformation and change agent experience having elevated the HR function from an administrative contributor to a true strategic business partner.
As the Director of Human Resources, the successful candidate will be responsible for the school’s People Strategy and Culture, which are key to driving our objectives. They will plan, lead, direct and develop the initiatives, policies, activities, and staff of the Human Resource (HR) department, ensuring legal compliance and implementation of the organizations mission and talent strategy.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Hire, train and develop team members in the HR department.
- Oversee the daily workflow of the department.
- Provide constructive and timely performance evaluations.
- Create employee development plans in the department.
- Handle discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Strategic:
- The Director of HR will report directly to the Head of School and the Director of Finance and Operations. They will serve on FASNY’s Executive Team and be responsible for the school’s People Strategy and Culture which are key to driving our objectives.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to understand the organizations goals and strategy related to staffing, recruiting, and retention.
- Conduct research and analysis of organizational trends including review of reports and metrics from the organization’s human resource information system (HRIS) or talent management system.
- In collaboration with Head of School, assess FASNY’s current performance management approach and assess gaps against best practices. Design/implement a progressive and comprehensive performance management/recognition process that constantly creates a talent assessment framework to identify high performers, develop up and coming talent, and helps managers address low performance in an effective manner.
- Lead the school’s employment brand building to attract and retain best of class talent.
- Lead the school’s L&D programs, develop and implement comprehensive and effective on-boarding and training programs.
- Monitor the organizational design to ensure the school can deliver high quality services and learning experience to its students. Lead all school re-organization projects.
- Deliver HR communications to employees.
- Plan and deliver employee engagement and acknowledgement events/projects
Operational:
- Maintain an HR database and report on HR costs; Forecast staffing costs.
- Plan, lead, develop and implement policies, processes, training, initiatives, and surveys to support the organization’s human resource compliance and strategy needs.
- Review and update Employee Handbook, develop and implement SOPs and policies as required.
- Oversee the administration of human resource programs including, but not limited to, compensation, benefits, and leave; disciplinary matters; disputes and investigations; performance and talent management; productivity, recognition, and morale; occupational health and safety; and training and development.
- Identify staffing and recruiting needs; develop and execute best practices for hiring and talent management in collaboration with faculty leadership.
- Develop and implement HR departmental budget.
- Support Director of Finance and division heads in creating divisional and school budget.
- Oversee benefits offering and ensure that it is cost effective while maintaining a competitive offering in the employment market.
- Maintain an open-door policy to encourage employees to share their insights, feedback, grievances and ideas.
- Align payroll systems with employee benefits, tax planning, and financial reporting.
- Resolve complex payroll issues and provide expert advice on matters such as tax laws, compensation, and benefits.
- Prepare and review payroll-related financial reports, budgets, and forecasts for senior management.
- Partner with HR Manager on managing compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and tax obligations. Review and approve payroll.
- Conduct regular audits of payroll and retirement procedures to identify and rectify discrepancies and to ensure continuous compliance.
- Provide data, feedback and advice to the head and the personnel and pension committee of the board of trustees.
Tactical:
- Manage FASNY’s employee immigration related projects. J1,2 visas, H1B visas, Green- card applications. (Must be a US Citizen due to immigration sponsorship portal requirements.)
- Lead recruitment committee. Support division head with their talent acquisition efforts, lead search for all senior positions.
- Lead personnel committee. Provide market intelligence, benchmarking data to ensure retention of talent and that the school maintains a competitive position in the employment market.
- Lead pension committee and be the key administrator on the school’s retirement plan.
- Oversee the school’s payroll, benefits and HRIS systems and processes, serve as a back- up to HR Manager.
- Attend all disciplinary and performance improvement meeting with employees. Coach managers on how to deliver these conversations.
- Attend all exit meeting.
- Create and implement an engaging open-enrollment process.
- Ensure the completion of all mandated surveys and peer reporting (AEFE), BEDS (New York State), NAIS Stats online, Fairchester Survey, etc.)
Legal:
- Monitor and ensure the school’s compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; review and modify policies and practices to maintain compliance.
- Maintain knowledge of trends, best practices, regulatory changes, and new technologies in human resources, talent management, and employment law; applies this knowledge to communicate changes in policy, practice, and resources to school leadership.
- In collaboration with outside counsel, manage all employee relation related claims and litigation.
- Ensure that all offer letters, employment agreements, termination letters and separation agreements are compliant with federal and state law, reflect the school’s policies.
Qualifications
Required competencies and experience:
- 10+ years in senior HR leadership.
- Strong communications skills, ability to influence stakeholders and decision makers.
- Culture champion and change agent.
- Creating and implementing SOPs, policies, frameworks.
- In-depth knowledge of US federal and NYS employment laws.
- In depth knowledge of US immigration laws. (Must be a US Citizen to manage immigration portal.)
- Having led and developed HR team members.
- Ability to speak French strongly preferred.
- Experience with working in private educational institution preferred.
- BA in HR or relevant field of study.
- SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP highly preferred.
- Working knowledge of New York and federal employment HR-related laws and regulations.
- Ability to develop and implement strategic HR initiatives.
- Ability to align payroll systems with employee benefits, tax planning, and financial reporting.
- Resolving complex payroll issues and providing expert advice on matters such as tax laws, compensation, and benefits.
- Preparing and reviewing payroll-related financial reports, budgets, and forecasts for senior management.
- Partner with HR Manager on managing compliance with federal, state, and local payroll, wage, and hour laws and tax obligations.

Salary & Benefits:
FASNY is committed to attracting and retaining outstanding Administration and Faculty by providing a competitive compensation package. This package includes, but is not limited to, a monthly salary, excellent health benefits and vacation package. Annual compensation will range from $150,000 - $170,000.
