ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION

Based in Sonoma County, Northern California Public Media (NorCal) serves the San Francisco region through two public television stations, KRCB and KPJK, and one public radio station, KRCB FM. As one of the very few community-owned and operated media entities serving the region, NorCal offers PBS, NPR and Independent Public Broadcasting programming. Our mission is to be a trusted, independent, and essential voice that heightens awareness of the diversity of the human experience, reports on issues of importance, and convenes public discussion to strengthen our community.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Director of Development is responsible for achieving membership revenue goals through planning, implementation and administering of a comprehensive fundraising program which includes membership contributions, major donor giving, planned giving, grants, underwriting, on-air fundraising, online giving strategies, direct mail, foundations, corporations, and fundraising events. The Director of Development reports directly to the CEO and works collaboratively with staff, board members and community partners to achieve the organization's goals. The Director will take an active role in NorCal’s Capital Campaign. This full-time exempt position includes excellent benefits and requires onsite work with occasional evening and weekend hours.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward new major donors for giving at the Leadership Circle level
  • Increase funding support from foundations, corporations and individuals through networking, outreach to businesses, involvement with the arts and education communities, and through other membership organizations
  • Prepare annual operating plans, strategies and budgets with specific analysis of general funding needs, fundraising opportunities and resources
  • Seek, develop, submit and manage grant proposals
  • Refine a systematic communications strategy that addresses the needs and interests of current and prospective donor groups; oversee and assist with the development of materials to tell the NorCal Public Media story to a diverse array of donors and prospects; ensure that these materials are distributed in a strategic, targeted, and timely fashion via mail and email campaigns, digital media platforms and in- person events and meetings
  • Prepare and present accurate monthly reports to the Board and staff on progress toward fundraising goals
  • Publicly represent Northern California Public Media with professionalism, positivity, integrity and genuine interest in the communities we serve
  • Inspire and motivate Development staff by fostering a work environment that encourages new ideas, risk-taking and team-based efforts while adhering to strategic priorities and meeting philanthropic goals
  • In close collaboration with the staff, provide input on member acquisition and retention strategies, marketing materials and campaigns (web, on-air, printed materials, etc.), and on-air fundraising events
  • Maintain a comprehensive development calendar for the fiscal year
  • Research philanthropic trends and analyze various public media reports to inform development efforts
  • Provide oversight on event planning and execution

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has 5 direct reports.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES

  • Knowledge in all aspects of fundraising with a focus on individual solicitation
  • Ability to plan and execute compelling fundraising campaigns and appeals
  • A record of personal success in raising money through major gifts from individuals, businesses, foundations, and the public sector
  • Entrepreneurial mindset—the ability to think strategically, set goals, analyze data and measure success
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, ability to speak and write persuasively
  • Grant writing, identification of new grant opportunities, grant management and reporting

· Proven management, supervisory and leadership capabilities including project/performance management

  • Strong computer skills with a demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office, Outlook Excel, presentations, file management and donor databases such as Memsys
  • Proficiency in online platforms such as email lists, shared drives, social media, and databases
  • Excellent time-management skills with the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize workload and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Proficiency in budget development and management
  • Attention to detail, adherence to deadlines
  • A high degree of confidentiality
  • Experience in public media a plus

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years relevant, non-profit fundraising experience with two plus years managing employees and volunteers, previous director-level experience preferred
  • History of securing and stewarding gifts ($10,000+)

· Must have a flexible work schedule, willingness to work onsite and some evenings and weekends

· Must provide own vehicle, have a valid state driver’s license and proof of auto insurance

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The physical requirements listed are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions and key responsibilities of this position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner at all times. Frequent operation of computer and other office equipment, the ability to sit at a workstation for long periods of time, stand, walk, climb stairs, bend, lift, twist, pull, push, carry, grasp, reach and stoop as need, and to occasionally lift and carry items up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. The employee works on-site in an office environment. Work may require occasional weekend and/or evening work. Travel will be required.

What We Offer:

This is a full-time (40-hr per week), exempt, salaried position. The salary range is $85,000-$100,000, depending on experience. Benefits offered include medical, dental, vision, 403B, paid vacation and holidays, floating holidays, diversity training programs, and mental health resources.
