Clinical Quality Improvement (CQI) Nurse Analyst RN

Job Summary


The Heart and Vascular Cener CQI Nurse Analyst position combines knowledge of diagnostic, interventional, and surgical cardiovascular procedures and experience within the operations settings of this environment to design, maintain and enhance the functions of clinical data collection, reporting, structures, systems management. The CQI Nurse Analyst will assist in compiling and analyzing data to assist the learning needs of staff specific to quality and safety initiatives. The position will report to the Heart and Vascular Center, Clinical Quality Data and Outcomes Manager and will work in close collaboration with the departments CQI nurses and data analyst to create custom reports as needed to identify CQI projects and ad hoc reports.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid California RN license without restrictions.
  • Successful completion of a Bachelor of Nursing degree (BSN).
  • Multiple years of recent experience in acute care and/or ICU/inpatient medical-surgical nursing.
  • Clinical chart review and abstraction experience.
  • Demonstrated skill to work collaboratively with physicians and clinical department chairs.
  • Advanced level of understanding of clinical assessment, planning, and evaluation skills demonstrating a broad base of clinical knowledge and patient care skills.
  • Advanced skill to abstract cases, maintain abstraction schedule, and perform data analysis of outcomes to identify trends and/or opportunities for improvement.
  • Advanced skill to use performance improvement methods for retrospective and concurrent reviews as demonstrated in past performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to present recommendations.
  • Advanced skill to speak publicly in front of physicians, department chairs, physician champions, and hospital leadership regarding quality-related data.
  • Computer and Internet skills and experience required - intermediate to advanced level of experience with MS Office products is essential for success in this position (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access) as is familiarity with electronic health record systems.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Clinical Nurse Specialist/ Informatics Certification
  • Successful completion of a master's degree in nursing.
  • Advanced skill to perform statistical analyses and present data and information in clear and concise report formats.
  • Knowledge of Joint Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Organization standards, California Administrative Code Title 22 Regulations, Hospital Quality Alliance Measures, Pay for Performance, and other regulatory agency criteria for performance improvement and clinical resource analysis.
  • Knowledge of medical-surgical and nursing treatment plans and skill in assessing necessity and appropriateness of care.
  • Advanced understanding of hospital and outpatient clinic operations and familiarity with internal and external sources of demographic, financial, and utilization data for the hospital and clinics.
  • Knowledge of basic methods and techniques associated with clinical program planning, development, and implementation.

Department Overview

Registered Nurses in the Heart Center department at UC Davis Medical Center provide care to adult patients with a variety of medical (medical surgical, critical care, emergent, perioperative) needs. This position reports to the Director of the Heart & Vascular Center and is responsible for coordination of clinical research trials in one or more of a variety of inpatient and/or outpatient settings. This position will coordinate the provision of nursing services in support of medical research of cardiovascular diseases in the Section of Cardiovascular Medicine. Coordinate the recruitment, enrollment, treatment and retention of research subjects in accordance with study protocols. Maintain data collection system and procedures, monitor patient response to treatment, administer study medications, perform phlebotomy, monitor vital signs and perform other specialized nursing procedures appropriate to specific needs of various research studies. Participates in the planning, development, and regulatory process of clinical protocols. Applies experience and judgment to determine the importance of a situation, sets priorities, and uses abstract thought to evaluate clinical protocols and situations. Participates in staff education or population focused training. Demonstrates leadership skills and the ability to problem solve on a broad level. Participates in the development and review of standard operational procedures applicable to the Cardiovascular Research Unit.
